Agra is about 230 km (143 miles) from Delhi. By private car on the Yamuna Expressway it takes about three and a half to four hours. The Gatimaan Express train takes about an hour and forty minutes, and other trains two to three hours. A car is the most flexible, and the train is the fastest.
Agra is about 230 km (143 miles) south-east of Delhi. By road on the Yamuna Expressway, the journey takes about three and a half to four hours without heavy traffic. By the Gatimaan Express train it takes about an hour and forty minutes between the two stations, and by other express trains about two to three hours. The real total depends on how far your hotel is from the station or the expressway, and on the time of day.
Agra is about 240 km from Jaipur and about 280 km separates Jaipur from Delhi, so the three cities form the Golden Triangle. Delhi to Agra is the first and shortest side, which is why many first-timers do it as a day trip.
The table compares the usual ways. Times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and train schedules.
| Way | Time | Comfort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car with driver | About 3.5 to 4 hours | High, door to door | Families, groups, flexible stops and luggage |
| Gatimaan Express train | About 1 hour 40 minutes | High, reserved seats | Same day trips, speed, avoiding the road |
| Other express trains | About 2 to 3 hours | Medium to high | Independent travellers comfortable with stations |
| Bus | About 4 to 5 hours | Basic to medium | Travellers who accept limited flexibility |
| Taxi straight from Delhi airport | About 4 to 5 hours | High | Arriving by air and heading directly to Agra |
If you want a quick view of the Taj Mahal with the least effort, take a car or the Gatimaan train and arrange a guide on arrival. If you want to see more than the Taj, drive.
For most families and small groups, yes. The Yamuna Expressway is a fast, controlled-access road that links the Delhi region to Agra and cuts the journey to under four hours, with a comfort stop in the middle. A car picks you up from your hotel, carries your luggage, lets you stop when you like, and takes you to the exact entrance you want at Agra.
It also lets you add stops. Common additions are Sikandra, Akbar’s tomb, a few kilometres outside Agra, and Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km from the city, which sits on the road toward Jaipur. A driver who knows the road helps with the timing: leaving Delhi early, around six in the morning, avoids the worst of the city traffic and gives you more time at the Taj.
The road is tolled, and the expressway has had its share of fog in winter, so a good driver adjusts speed and timing. Delhi traffic, especially the first hour on the way out of the city, can add time, so plan with a little spare room.

The Gatimaan Express is among India’s fastest trains. It runs from Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi to Agra Cantt station, in about an hour and forty minutes, with a morning departure and an evening return that suit a day trip. It does not run on Fridays, which fits the Taj Mahal’s closed day. Because timetables and operating days can change, check the current schedule with Indian Railways’ official booking channels before you plan around it.
Practical points:
See our Taj Mahal tour from Delhi by train for how we combine the train with a private car and a guide.
Several other express trains connect New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin with Agra in about two to three hours, including Shatabdi-class services in the morning. They are comfortable when booked in advance in the better classes, but timetables change, and the number of options varies with the day.
Buses run from Delhi’s main terminals to Agra and take about four to five hours, depending on traffic. Standard buses are basic, and air-conditioned coaches are more comfortable. Buses are the least flexible option, and they drop you in Agra without a guide or transfer, so they suit confident independent travellers more than first-timers.
For practical purposes, no. The distance is short, and Agra’s airport has limited services, so it is not a realistic way to go from Delhi. Most travellers fly into Delhi and drive or take the train to Agra. If you are flying into Delhi and want to head straight to Agra, tell us your flight details so that the driver is ready at arrivals. The drive from the airport usually takes four to five hours.
A same-day trip is possible and popular, though it is a long day. A typical plan, with times approximate:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:00 to 6:30 am | Leave Delhi by car, with a comfort stop on the way |
| About 10:00 am | Arrive in Agra; meet your guide; start at the Taj Mahal |
| Late morning | Taj Mahal with your guide, about two to three hours including security |
| Early afternoon | Lunch, then Agra Fort or a marble inlay workshop if you wish |
| About 4:00 pm | Leave Agra for Delhi |
| About 8:00 to 9:00 pm | Back at your Delhi hotel or airport, depending on traffic |
The train version starts later and ends earlier, but it depends on the schedule and gives less time on site. If you want to see the Taj at sunrise, stay a night in Agra. See our Agra overnight tour or the Sunrise Taj Mahal tour.
This table gives a quick guide by type of traveller.
| If you are… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short on time and want the Taj | Gatimaan train with a guide and car on arrival | Fastest line between the cities |
| Travelling with children or older relatives | Private car | No stations, no luggage handling, flexible comfort stops |
| Continuing to Jaipur next | Private car | You can stop at Fatehpur Sikri on the way |
| A solo traveller who wants independence | Train or car with a guide in Agra | Safe, simple and still flexible |
| Arriving in Delhi late at night | Rest in Delhi and travel the next morning | Avoids a very long first day |
Do not plan the Taj for a Friday. It is closed, whatever the transport.
The journey itself is simple. It is the hours around it that cause trouble: finding the right station, the right gate, the right guide and a driver who is there when you come out. A private plan solves those in one go. Your driver meets you at the hotel, your guide meets you at Agra, and the order of the day is set by you.

About 230 km (143 miles) by road.
About three and a half to four hours by the Yamuna Expressway, depending on traffic.
The Gatimaan Express train, which takes about an hour and forty minutes. It does not run on Fridays.
Yes, by car or train. Starting early gives you time for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. An overnight stay is more relaxed.
Not in any practical sense. The distance is short and Agra’s airport has limited services, so most travellers drive or take the train.
About 8 km, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car.
Hazrat Nizamuddin. Confirm the current timetable with Indian Railways’ official booking channels before you travel.
The Yamuna Expressway is a modern, controlled-access road. A good driver adjusts speed and timing for fog and traffic, particularly in winter.
It is better placed on the road between Agra and Jaipur. From Delhi, Sikandra and Mathura are easier additions.
Any day except Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed.
