Overview

The Golden Triangle, and Then the Oldest City on the Ganges

The Golden Triangle shows you India’s palaces and monuments. Varanasi shows you something older: a city where life and death, ritual and routine happen side by side on the riverbank. Adding it turns a sightseeing trip into a journey with real contrast.

This eight-day route takes in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, returns to Delhi, and flies to Varanasi (about an hour and a half), where you spend a night and a full morning. We plan it with care: the Ganga aarti in the evening, a boat on the river at dawn and a guide who explains what you are seeing and how to behave on the ghats.

Varanasi is intense, and some visitors find it overwhelming. Your guide helps you pace it, and we can leave more time for rest if you want.

Wow… service at its best!

“We actually did 14 days which included a trip to Varanasi, then the Golden Triangle & out to Jaisalmer. Every step of the way we were accompanied by Bobby. Our Driver & coach was super, but focus on detail and ensuring that the safety & wellbeing of individual travellers was met, really put the trip at an all time high!”

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

Is Varanasi worth adding to the Golden Triangle?

+

Yes, if you want a very different India. The Golden Triangle is monuments and palaces, while Varanasi is a living pilgrimage city on the Ganges. It adds depth and contrast, but it is intense.

How do you get from the Golden Triangle to Varanasi?

+

By air. We return to Delhi and fly to Varanasi, about an hour and a half. Flights are not included, and we can book them for you.

What do we do in Varanasi?

+

The evening Ganga aarti on the ghats, a dawn boat ride on the Ganges, a walk through the old lanes and a visit to Sarnath, where the Buddha first taught.

Can I add Khajuraho or Orchha?

+

Those fit a different route. Ask us and we will plan a separate heritage itinerary. This journey keeps to the Golden Triangle plus Varanasi so that distances stay comfortable.

Is photography allowed in Varanasi?

+

Photography is welcome on the ghats and the river, but not at the cremation ghats, and you should ask before photographing people. Your guide advises on the day.

Is Varanasi suitable for older travellers and children?

+

With care. The ghats involve steps and crowds, and the lanes are narrow. Tell us about mobility needs and we will adapt the timing and the boat plan.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and licensed guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

+

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. We plan Agra on any other day, so please share your dates early.

Do you recommend elephant rides at Amber Fort?

+

No. We do not include elephant rides. You go up to Amber Fort by jeep or on foot, and your guide takes you through the palace at a calm pace.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

Good to know

Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays

The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays, so we plan Agra on any other day of the week. Please tell us your dates early.

Varanasi etiquette

Dress modestly, remove shoes at temples and ask before photographing people or the cremation ghats, where photography is not allowed. Your guide explains this on the ghats. Boat timings and aarti schedules can vary, and your guide confirms them.

Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable. December and January mornings are cold and often foggy on the Ganges, which can delay flights. April to June is very hot, and July to September is monsoon, when the Ganges is high and some ghats are underwater.
