Overview

Nine Days Through the Temple Country of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu holds some of the oldest living temples in the world, and they are still places of daily worship rather than ruins. This journey follows them from the Pallava shrines of Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram, through the Chola capital of Thanjavur, to the towers of Madurai, the island shrine of Rameswaram and the southern tip of India at Kanyakumari. Three of the temples, at Thanjavur and Darasuram, belong to the UNESCO group known as the Great Living Chola Temples.

You travel by private luxury car with a driver, and a local guide joins you at the main temples to explain the carvings, the rituals and the rules of each place. We keep the days unhurried, time the visits around the quiet hours and the evening ceremonies, and tell you plainly where temple dress codes and photography rules apply.

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

How many days do I need for the temples of Tamil Nadu?

+

Nine days covers Kanchipuram, the Chola temples, Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari at a steady pace. With fewer days, we suggest keeping Thanjavur, Madurai and Rameswaram and dropping the south.

Which are the Great Living Chola Temples?

+

The UNESCO group includes the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. This journey visits Thanjavur and Darasuram.

Can non-Hindus enter the temples?

+

Most large Tamil Nadu temples allow visitors of all faiths into the main halls, though some inner sanctums are for Hindus only, and rules vary by temple. Your guide explains each one before you enter.

What should I wear at the temples?

+

Cover your shoulders and knees. Loose cotton clothes work best. Shoes are removed at the entrance, so wear socks you do not mind taking off and carry a light bag.

What is the best time to visit South India?

+

October to March is the most comfortable. The northeast monsoon from October to December can bring heavy rain to the east coast, and April to June is very hot.

Is the Kanyakumari ferry always running?

+

The ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial depends on sea conditions and can be suspended in rough weather. We schedule it early on the last morning and tell you if there is a change.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

Can I add Kerala?

+

Yes. Kanyakumari is about two hours from Thiruvananthapuram, so the journey can continue into Kerala. See our Kerala journeys or ask us to link the two.

Is this suitable for older travellers and children?

+

Yes, with the right pace. Temples involve walking barefoot and some steps, and two days have long drives. Tell us about mobility needs and we adjust the stops.

How do I book?

Good to know

Temple dress and rules

Cover shoulders and knees, remove footwear at the entrance, and expect to walk barefoot on warm stone. Some temples restrict mobile phones and cameras or limit entry to the inner sanctum to Hindus. Rules differ by temple and can change, and your guide advises you on the day.

Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable. The northeast monsoon brings rain to the east coast from October to December. April to June is very hot, so days start early.

Long drive days

Day 3 and Day 8 are longer, about six hours each, with comfort stops. We keep a steady pace and can add a night if you prefer shorter days.

Dietary needs

South Indian food is largely vegetarian, and most hotels cook for vegan, gluten-free and other diets with notice.
