Everything You Need to Know, at a Glance

Short answer: a Jaisalmer desert safari takes two nights. Spend the first in a heritage hotel after seeing Jaisalmer Fort and the havelis, ride a camel across the dunes at sunset, and sleep in a desert camp. Sam dunes are bigger and busier, and Khuri is quieter. The best months are October to March.

Overview

A Golden City and the Dunes Beyond It

Jaisalmer rises from the Thar desert like a sandcastle: a golden sandstone fort with homes, temples and shops still inside its walls. Beyond it, the sand begins. A night out in the dunes, with a camel ride at sunset, music at the camp and a sky full of stars, is one of the memorable parts of a Rajasthan trip.

There are two main dune areas. Sam is the largest and best known, and it is busy at sunset. Khuri is smaller and quieter. We choose between them based on the season, your preferences and the camp.

Desert camps vary a lot in quality, and we choose those with proper beds, clean toilets and good food. Nights are cold from December to February, and the heat in May and June is severe, so we advise on timing.

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

What is the best desert safari in Jaisalmer?

+

Sam dunes are the largest and best known, with the most facilities, but they are busy at sunset. Khuri dunes are smaller and quieter. The best choice depends on the season and what you prefer.

How many days do I need in Jaisalmer?

+

Two nights is ideal: one in town for the fort and havelis, and one in the desert. A single night is possible but rushed.

What is a desert camp like?

+

A camp of tents or small rooms with a dining area and folk music. Quality varies widely, from basic to comfortable. We choose camps with proper beds and clean toilets.

When is the best time to go?

+

October to March. December and January nights are cold. April to June is extremely hot, so we do not recommend it.

Is a camel ride included?

+

Yes, a short camel ride at the dunes is included. If you prefer, we can arrange a jeep ride instead.

How far is Jaisalmer from Jodhpur?

+

About 285 km (175 miles), roughly four and a half to five hours.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and licensed guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

Is the driving between cities tiring?

+

Rajasthan is big, so some days involve four to six hours on the road. We keep the longest legs to one a day, build in stops at places worth stopping, and use a luxury air-conditioned car with a driver who knows the roads. The route table on this page shows every leg.
