Everything You Need to Know, at a Glance

Short answer: yes, you can do a Ranthambore tiger safari from Jaipur. Drive about 180 km (three and a half to four hours), take an afternoon safari, stay one night, take a morning safari and return to Jaipur. Tigers are wild, so no sighting is guaranteed, but two safaris give you a fair chance. The park is closed from about July to September.

Overview

Two Safaris, One Night, and a Real Chance at a Tiger

Ranthambore National Park is one of the best places in India to look for wild tigers, and it is a short drive from Jaipur, about 180 km (110 miles). That makes it possible to add a tiger safari to a Rajasthan trip without a week set aside.

One safari is often not enough, so this journey takes two: one in the afternoon you arrive and one the next morning. You stay close to the park, travel with your own driver and a naturalist, and return to Jaipur the next day.

Tigers are wild, and no operator can promise a sighting. The park also has lakes, a 10th-century fort and ruined palaces, and its leopards, sambar and birds make a day in the forest worthwhile either way.

Jaipur to Ranthambore and first safari

Overnight: Ranthambore
+

Your driver collects you from your Jaipur hotel in the morning and drives about 180 km (110 miles) to Ranthambore (three and a half to four hours). Check in at your lodge, have lunch, and set out on your first safari in the afternoon in a private jeep with a naturalist, subject to zone and availability.

Day 2

Morning safari and return to Jaipur

Ends: Jaipur

What Makes the Safari Easy

A wildlife trip depends on booked slots and early starts. Here is what we manage.

Safaris booked early

Zones and slots allotted

Seats in the park are limited and allotted by zone, so we book as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Wild, not guaranteed

An honest promise

Tigers are wild animals and no operator can guarantee a sighting. More safaris improve your chances, and the forests are rewarding in themselves.

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

Can I see a tiger at Ranthambore?

+

Possibly. Ranthambore is one of the better places in India to see wild tigers, but they are wild animals and no operator can guarantee a sighting. Two safaris improve your chances.

How far is Ranthambore from Jaipur?

+

About 180 km (110 miles), roughly three and a half to four hours by road.

Can I do Ranthambore as a day trip from Jaipur?

+

It is possible, but it means about seven to eight hours on the road plus one safari, and the best light is at dawn. We recommend one night so you can take two safaris.

What is the best time for a tiger safari at Ranthambore?

+

The park is open from about October to June. Winter is cooler, with thicker cover. March to June is hot, but animals gather at water, which many guides consider the best time for sightings. The park is closed in the monsoon.

Is it a jeep or a canter safari?

+

We arrange a private jeep with a naturalist, subject to zone and availability. A canter is a larger shared vehicle, which we do not use unless you ask.

What should I wear on safari?

+

Neutral colours, layers for cold mornings, a hat and sunscreen. Avoid bright colours and perfume.

Can I bring children?

+

Yes, with a calm temperament, because silence matters on safari. Tell us the ages and we will advise on the best vehicle and timing.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver, jeep and naturalist. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours. Safari slots are limited, so please write early.

Good to know

Safari season and weather

October to June is the safari season in Rajasthan. The parks close during the monsoon, usually from about July to September, and reopen around October. Winter mornings are cold in an open jeep, so pack layers. Many guides rate March to June as the best time for tiger sightings, because animals gather at water, though it is very hot. Park rules and zone allocations change, and we confirm them when we book.

What to wear

Neutral colours, layers for cold mornings, a hat and sunscreen. Avoid bright colours and perfume. Your naturalist advises on more.
