Short answer: three days is a good length for Jaipur and Pushkar. Spend a day in Jaipur, drive about 145 km (90 miles) to Pushkar on day two via Amber Fort, spend the evening at the holy lake, and return to Jaipur on day three. Pushkar is a holy town, so meat, eggs and alcohol are not sold there.

Overview

A Pink City, a Holy Lake, Three Days

Jaipur is a royal city of palaces and bazaars. Pushkar, about 145 km (90 miles) away, is a small holy town around a lake, with ghats, temples and a bazaar that smells of rosewater and marigolds. Together they give you two Rajasthans: the grand one and the devout one.

Pushkar is a pilgrimage town, so meat, eggs and alcohol are not sold in its centre, and visitors remove shoes at the ghats. On the ghats, priests may offer to perform a ceremony and ask for a donation. You can decline politely, and your guide helps you with this.

Pushkar’s famous camel fair is held around November, and its dates follow the lunar calendar. If you want to attend, tell us early, as hotels fill up.

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

How far is Pushkar from Jaipur?

+

About 145 km (90 miles), roughly two and a half to three hours by road.

Is Pushkar worth visiting?

+

Yes, if you are interested in pilgrimage towns. It has a holy lake, ghats, a Brahma temple and a lively bazaar, and is quieter than Jaipur. It is small, so one night is enough.

Can I eat meat or drink alcohol in Pushkar?

+

Not in the centre. Pushkar is a holy town, and meat, eggs and alcohol are not sold there. Jaipur has no such restriction.

What about the priests at the lake?

+

Priests may offer to perform a ceremony and ask for a donation. You may decline politely. Your guide helps you.

When is the Pushkar Camel Fair?

+

Around November, following the lunar calendar. It is very busy, and hotels fill early, so write to us well in advance.

Can I add Jodhpur or Udaipur?

+

Yes. Our 7 Days Rajasthan Tour includes Pushkar on the way to Jodhpur and Udaipur. Tell us your days and we will adapt the route.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and licensed guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

Is the driving between cities tiring?

+

Rajasthan is big, so some days involve four to six hours on the road. We keep the longest legs to one a day, build in stops at places worth stopping, and use a luxury air-conditioned car with a driver who knows the roads. The route table on this page shows every leg.

Do you recommend elephant rides at Amber Fort?

+

No. We do not include elephant rides. You go up to Amber Fort by jeep or on foot, and your guide takes you through the palace at a calm pace.
