Overview

See the Taj at Its Best Hour

The Taj Mahal changes with the light. At first light the marble glows soft and pale, and the crowds are at their thinnest. It is the visit most travellers remember.

To be at the gate when it opens, it helps to sleep in Agra. This journey takes you from Delhi in the afternoon, shows you the city at sunset, and puts you at the Taj at dawn, with a guide who knows where the light falls and a car waiting afterwards.

If you would rather do it in a single day, an extremely early departure from Delhi is possible. We usually recommend the overnight, and will explain the trade-offs when we plan it with you.

Wow… service at its best!

“We actually did 14 days which included a trip to Varanasi, then the Golden Triangle & out to Jaisalmer. Every step of the way we were accompanied by Bobby. Our Driver & coach was super, but focus on detail and ensuring that the safety & wellbeing of individual travellers was met, really put the trip at an all time high!”

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

What time does the Taj Mahal open for sunrise?

+

The Taj Mahal opens around first light, so the time changes through the year. Your guide confirms the exact time the evening before, and we plan your hotel stay close enough to be at the gate early.

Do I need to stay overnight in Agra to see the sunrise?

+

It is the most comfortable way, because you can walk or drive a short distance in the morning. A single-day option with a very early departure from Delhi is possible, but it makes for a long, tiring day.

Is the Taj Mahal open on Fridays?

+

No, it is closed to visitors on Fridays. We plan the sunrise visit for another day.

Is sunrise or sunset better at the Taj?

+

Sunrise is quieter, with softer light and thinner crowds. Sunset over the Taj from Mehtab Bagh is beautiful in a different way. This journey gives you both.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and guide, and nothing is shared with other travellers.

Can I add Jaipur or the rest of the Golden Triangle?

+

Yes. This journey continues naturally to Jaipur and beyond. See our Golden Triangle journeys, or ask us to extend it.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

What should I carry, and what is not allowed at the Taj Mahal?

+

Keep your passport or a clear copy with you. Large bags, food, tripods, drones and tobacco are not allowed inside, while small bags and cameras are fine. Rules can change, so your guide briefs you on the day.

Can I take photographs inside the Taj Mahal?

+

Photography is welcome in the gardens and on the platform, and your guide will help you find the best spots. Photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum chamber.

Is this suitable for children and older travellers?

+

Yes, with the right pace. The Taj Mahal involves walking and some steps, so tell us about young children or any mobility needs and we will adjust the timing, stops and vehicle.

What if fog or cloud hides the sunrise?

+

In December and January early-morning fog can reduce visibility, and a clear sunrise can never be guaranteed. The visit continues, and the soft light on the marble is still worth the early start.

Good to know

Sunrise timing

The Taj Mahal opens around first light, so the time changes through the year. Your guide confirms the exact time the evening before.

Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays

Sunrise is not possible on a Friday. We plan the sunrise for another day and tell you early if your dates need to change.

Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable. In summer the sunrise is early and the day gets hot quickly, so we plan around the heat.
