Overview

Seven Days Among Lakes, Meadows and Snow

Kashmir is a valley of lakes, Mughal gardens and high meadows, ringed by Himalayan snow. This journey takes in its four best-known places in an easy week: Srinagar and Dal Lake, the meadows of Sonamarg, the ski-slopes of Gulmarg and the river valley of Pahalgam.

You travel by private luxury car with a local driver who knows the valley, and stay one night on a houseboat on Dal Lake. The pace is easy, with a morning shikara ride, time in the gardens and plenty of room to simply look. We watch local conditions and adjust the route if the weather or the situation on the ground requires it.

Day 2

Srinagar

Overnight: Srinagar hotel

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

Is Kashmir safe for tourists?

+

Tourist areas such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam welcome visitors, and we travel with a local driver and keep the plans flexible. Conditions can change, so check your government’s travel advice before you book and we will advise you nearer the time.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?

+

April to October is the main season. The tulip garden flowers for a few weeks around April, and December to February is for snow at Gulmarg. Autumn, in October, has beautiful colour.

Do I need a permit for Kashmir?

+

Not for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg or Pahalgam. Some border areas need a permit, and we confirm any requirement before you travel.

Will my mobile phone work in Kashmir?

+

Indian prepaid SIM cards from outside the state usually do not work. Postpaid numbers and most international roaming plans do, though coverage can vary. Hotels offer Wi-Fi.

What is a houseboat stay on Dal Lake like?

+

A traditional timber houseboat with carved cedar rooms, a lounge, a crew and meals. It is comfortable rather than luxurious, and one night is usually enough.

Is the Gulmarg Gondola always open?

+

It runs most days in the season, but weather and wind can close it. Tickets and the stage you reach depend on conditions, and we arrange them on the day.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

Can I add Ladakh?

+

Yes. Many travellers fly from Srinagar to Leh, or take the road in summer. See our Ladakh tour or ask us to link them.

Is this suitable for older travellers and children?

+

Yes, with the right pace. Altitudes are modest, but some places involve walking and pony rides. Tell us about mobility needs and we adjust the stops.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

Good to know

Mobile connectivity

Indian prepaid SIM cards bought outside Jammu and Kashmir often do not work in the state, and international roaming can be unreliable. Postpaid Indian numbers usually work. Hotels have Wi-Fi.

Safety and advisories

We watch local conditions and your government’s travel advice, and adjust the route if needed. Please check the advice for your country before you book.

Best time to go

April to June is mild with spring flowers, and the tulip garden flowers for a few weeks around April. July and August are warm. September and October bring autumn colour. December to February is cold, with snow at Gulmarg.

Snow and roads

Heavy snow can close the road to Sonamarg and delay the Gondola. Keep a buffer day in winter.

Houseboat note

Houseboats are traditional timber boats. Facilities are comfortable but heating can be limited in winter.
