Varanasi is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the holiest in Hinduism. People come to bathe, to pray and to die, and all of it happens in public on the riverbank. It can be moving, confusing and exhausting in the same hour.
We plan Varanasi around the light, the heat and the temple hours, with a licensed guide who explains the rituals and what not to photograph, and a car that waits where the lanes end. For a wider pilgrimage, the journeys here add Sarnath, Prayagraj, Ayodhya or the temples of Braj.
