Overview

Krishna's Braj Region, and the Taj Mahal Beside It

Mathura and Vrindavan sit on the road between Delhi and Agra, about 150 km (95 miles) from Delhi, and form one of India’s most important pilgrimage regions, the land of Lord Krishna’s birth and childhood. This journey puts the Braj temples and the Taj Mahal into one trip, so you travel the route the way many Indians do, with the pilgrimage towns on the way.

Temples here have their own rhythm, with midday closures, security checks and dress customs, so the day is timed around opening hours and your guide explains what you are seeing and how to behave. You may be moved by it, or simply fascinated. Either is welcome.

If you are travelling for devotion, tell us. We can slow the pace and add time for darshan and the evening aarti.

Visit the temples with your guide, which may include Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir, then continue about 12 km (7 miles) to Mathura for the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, subject to opening hours and security rules. Drive about 55 km (35 miles) on to Agra for the night.

Agra and return to Delhi

Ends: Delhi

Wow… service at its best!

“We actually did 14 days which included a trip to Varanasi, then the Golden Triangle & out to Jaisalmer. Every step of the way we were accompanied by Bobby. Our Driver & coach was super, but focus on detail and ensuring that the safety & wellbeing of individual travellers was met, really put the trip at an all time high!”

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

Where are Mathura and Vrindavan?

+

They are in Uttar Pradesh, about 150 km (95 miles) from Delhi and about 55 km (35 miles) from Agra, so they sit naturally on the road between Delhi and the Taj Mahal.

Why are Mathura and Vrindavan important?

+

Mathura is revered as the birthplace of Lord Krishna and Vrindavan as the place of his childhood. Together they are among the most visited pilgrimage regions in India, in the Braj area.

Can I do Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra in one day?

+

It is possible but very long, with about 435 km (270 miles) on the road. We recommend two days so that the temples and the Taj Mahal each get their time.

Which temples will we visit?

+

Usually Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir in Vrindavan and the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex in Mathura, subject to opening hours, queues and security. Tell us if there are temples you particularly want to see.

What should I wear and what can I carry?

+

Cover shoulders and knees and wear shoes that are easy to remove. Some temples do not allow phones, cameras or bags, so carry as little as possible. Your guide advises on the day.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

+

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. We plan this journey for any other day.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and licensed guide. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

Can I add more time for devotion?

+

Yes. Tell us and we will add time for darshan and the evening aarti, or add a night in Vrindavan. We adjust the pace to suit you.

Is this suitable for older travellers?

+

Yes, with the right pace. Temple visits involve walking and standing in queues, so tell us about mobility needs and we will plan the timing and stops.

How do I book?

Good to know

Temple rules

Shoulders and knees should be covered and shoes are left at the entrance. Some temples, including the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, have security checks and do not allow phones, cameras or bags inside, so travel light. Rules and timings can change, and your guide confirms them on the day.

Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays

The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays, so we plan Agra on any other day of the week. Please tell us your dates early.

Festivals and crowds

Janmashtami (the birthday of Krishna), Holi and the major festivals draw very large crowds to Mathura and Vrindavan. Tell us if you want to be there or want to avoid them, and we will plan accordingly. Dates follow the lunar calendar.
