In the hills of Maharashtra, workers carved whole temples out of living rock. At Ellora, the Kailasa Temple, Cave 16, was cut from the top down out of a single basalt cliff in the eighth century, and is among the largest monolithic structures in the world. At Ajanta, about a hundred kilometres away, Buddhist monasteries carved from a horseshoe gorge hold some of the oldest surviving paintings in India.
Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and both reward a guide, because the stories are in the carvings. The caves close on different days, Ellora on Tuesdays and Ajanta on Mondays, and we plan the order around that.
The base is Aurangabad, officially Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, which has airport and rail links with Mumbai. If you are coming from Mumbai, we can combine this journey with our Bollywood and Mumbai tour.
