Overview

The Golden Triangle, and Then the Heart of Punjab

The Golden Triangle shows you Mughal and Rajput India. Amritsar shows you the Sikh heart of Punjab: the gold-leaf Harmandir Sahib on its sacred pool, a kitchen that feeds tens of thousands of people for free every day, and a city shaped by the Partition of 1947. Adding it gives the trip a different kind of depth.

This nine-day route covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by car, returns to Delhi, and flies to Amritsar (about an hour and a quarter), where you spend two nights. The Golden Temple is at its most beautiful in the evening and again at dawn, so we plan for both.

The Golden Temple welcomes everyone, with a few simple customs: cover your head, remove your shoes and wash your feet, and do not bring tobacco or alcohol. Your guide explains each and helps you through.

Wow… service at its best!

“We actually did 14 days which included a trip to Varanasi, then the Golden Triangle & out to Jaisalmer. Every step of the way we were accompanied by Bobby. Our Driver & coach was super, but focus on detail and ensuring that the safety & wellbeing of individual travellers was met, really put the trip at an all time high!”

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

Can I add Amritsar to the Golden Triangle?

+

Yes. After Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, fly from Delhi to Amritsar, about an hour and a quarter, and spend two nights there. Nine days gives both halves their time.

How many days do I need in Amritsar?

+

Two nights is ideal: the Golden Temple in the evening and at dawn, Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and the Wagah border ceremony. A single day is possible but rushed.

What is langar?

+

Langar is the free community kitchen at the Golden Temple, which serves simple vegetarian meals to anyone who comes, regardless of faith. Visitors sit on the floor and eat together. A donation is optional.

What should I wear at the Golden Temple?

+

Modest clothing, with your head covered (scarves are provided if you do not have one), and your shoes left at the entrance. Your guide advises on the day.

How far is the Wagah border from Amritsar?

+

About 30 km (19 miles), roughly forty-five minutes by road. The ceremony takes place in the late afternoon, and timings vary with the season.

How do you get from Jaipur or Delhi to Amritsar?

+

By air. We return to Delhi and fly to Amritsar, about an hour and a quarter. Flights are not included, and we can book them for you.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury cars, drivers and licensed guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

What is the best time to go?

+

October to March is the most comfortable for the whole route. Winter mornings in Amritsar are cold and often foggy, and April to June is very hot.

Good to know

Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays

The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays, so we plan Agra on any other day of the week. Please tell us your dates early.

Golden Temple customs

Cover your head (scarves are available at the entrance), remove shoes and wash your feet before entering. Tobacco, alcohol and meat are not allowed in the complex. The Golden Temple is open to everyone, and visiting is free.

Wagah border

The flag-lowering ceremony takes place daily in the late afternoon, and its timing changes with the season. Arrive early, as seating fills up, and carry only a small bag because security is tight. Closures can happen with little notice, and your guide confirms the day’s plan.
