Overview

Rajasthan's Forts and the Edge of the Thar Desert

This route trades the lakes of Udaipur for the desert. You see the Pink City of Jaipur, the Blue City of Jodhpur under its great fort, and Jaisalmer, the golden city that rises out of the sand.

Jaisalmer is the reward for the long drives. Two nights there give you the living fort, the carved havelis and a camel ride across the Sam dunes at sunset. If you want to sleep under the stars, ask for a night in a desert camp.

Distances are long, so each leg is planned with breaks, and the final day is built around your onward flight or train from Jodhpur or Jaisalmer.

Highlights
✦
Amber Fort and Jaipur's City Palace

✦

✦

✦

✦

Wow… service at its best!

“We actually did 14 days which included a trip to Varanasi, then the Golden Triangle & out to Jaisalmer. Every step of the way we were accompanied by Bobby. Our Driver & coach was super, but focus on detail and ensuring that the safety & wellbeing of individual travellers was met, really put the trip at an all time high!”

Questions

About This Journey

Cannot find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply personally.

Is Jaisalmer worth the long drive?

+

Yes, for many travellers it is the highlight. The golden fort is a living town, the havelis are intricately carved, and the dunes at sunset are memorable. Two nights there make the drive worthwhile.

When is the best time to visit Jaisalmer and the desert?

+

October to March. The desert is extremely hot from April to June, and nights are cold in December and January.

How long are the drives?

+

Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 340 km (five and a half to six hours), and Jodhpur to Jaisalmer about 285 km (four and a half to five hours). The table on this page lists every leg.

Is the camel ride included?

+

Yes, a short camel ride at the Sam sand dunes at sunset is included. An overnight stay in a desert camp is optional and available on request.

How does the tour end?

+

In Jaisalmer, or by driving back to Jodhpur for your onward flight or train. Tell us your plans and we will time the last day.

Is this tour private?

+

Yes. You have your own luxury car, driver and licensed guides. Nothing is shared with other travellers.

How do I book?

+

Send your dates through the form on this page. A Travelage specialist will reply with a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

Is the driving between cities tiring?

+

Rajasthan is big, so some days involve four to six hours on the road. We keep the longest legs to one a day, build in stops at places worth stopping, and use a luxury air-conditioned car with a driver who knows the roads. The route table on this page shows every leg.

Do you recommend elephant rides at Amber Fort?

+

No. We do not include elephant rides. You go up to Amber Fort by jeep or on foot, and your guide takes you through the palace at a calm pace.

Is this suitable for children and older travellers?

+

Yes, with the right pace. Forts involve steps and walking, so tell us about young children or mobility needs and we will adjust the stops, timing and vehicle.

What should I wear?

+

Light cotton in the warmer months and layers from November to February, when mornings and desert nights are cold. Comfortable shoes for the forts, and shoulders and knees covered at temples.

Desert nights

From December to January nights in the desert are cold. Pack warm layers, and tell us if you would like a night in a desert camp.

Best time to go

October to March is the most comfortable. April to June is extremely hot in the desert, so we do not recommend this route then. July to September is monsoon, quieter and greener.

Long driving days

The Jaipur to Jodhpur and Jodhpur to Jaisalmer days are each four to six hours. We build in breaks, and you can ask for a shorter day.
