Jaipur is a royal city of palaces and bazaars. Pushkar, about 145 km (90 miles) away, is a small holy town around a lake, with ghats, temples and a bazaar that smells of rosewater and marigolds. Together they give you two Rajasthans: the grand one and the devout one.
Pushkar is a pilgrimage town, so meat, eggs and alcohol are not sold in its centre, and visitors remove shoes at the ghats. On the ghats, priests may offer to perform a ceremony and ask for a donation. You can decline politely, and your guide helps you with this.
Pushkar’s famous camel fair is held around November, and its dates follow the lunar calendar. If you want to attend, tell us early, as hotels fill up.
